How Trending Works in QuestSmith
In QuestSmith, the Trending category is designed to surface high-quality, engaging stories that resonate with the community. We’ve moved away from simple “Play Counts,” which often rewarded clickbait. Instead, our current system (restructured in late 2025) focuses on genuine player enjoyment and sustained engagement.
1. The Three Core Performance Signals
To determine what trends, we analyze three equally weighted signals that prove a story has “staying power”:
- Retention (Returning Players): We look at how many different days a user returns to the same adventure within a week. If a player comes back to your story multiple times, it signals a deep narrative hook.
- Engagement (Play Time): We measure the average time spent in the Adventure area. Longer sessions suggest the content is holding the player's attention.
- Adventure Longevity (Play-Through Rate): We track how many adventures reach at least 40 actions. Stories that lead to long-lasting journeys receive a higher score.
Note on Actions: An “action” is any entry created by you or the AI. Using “Continue” counts as one action, while “Take a Turn” counts as two (your input + AI output).
2. Fair Visibility Adjustments
We use specific logic to ensure the Trending page remains a level playing field for all creators:
- Audience Scaling: Content needs a baseline number of players before it can trend. This prevents a single person playing their own story for hours from hitting the #1 spot.
- The “Freshness” Edge: Newer content receives a slight boost to help fresh ideas gain momentum, though legendary older stories can still trend if their engagement remains high.
- Separate Scoring Pools: Different story types are scored in their own categories so that a short, punchy “Choice-Based Mystery” isn't unfairly compared to a massive “Open-World Sandbox.”
3. Pro-Tips for Creators: How to Trend
While a bit of luck is involved, the best way to improve a story’s performance is to focus on Narrative Quality.
Build a Strong Foundation
A trending-worthy story requires a planned structure underneath its open-ended play:
- Clear Opening Prompts: Get players hooked immediately. If they have to spend 10 minutes fixing Plot Components or setup errors, they will abandon the story.
- Focused Arcs & Specific Beats: Ensure the story feels like it's moving forward. A “Weak” arc just fights a dragon; a “Trending” arc reveals the dragon was protecting the world from a greater threat, naturally extending the play time.
Deepen the Experience
- Meaningful NPCs: Give characters clear motives and unique voices using Story Cards.
- Emotional Connection: Players stay longest in stories they feel invested in. Add depth, nuance, and a “human touch” to your world-building.
- Choices that Matter: Ensure scene transitions and milestones react to player decisions. When choices have consequences, players are more likely to return to see the outcome.
Test and Iterate
- Extensive Testing: Play your scenario yourself. If you run into a “narrative wall” or get bored, your players will too. Fix the flow before you publish.
- Don't Chase the Numbers: Most top creators didn't trend on their first try. Focus on creating what you love; in a versatile engine like QuestSmith, high-quality content will eventually find its audience.
Summary: Trending isn't about how many people click your story—it's about how many people can't put it down. Focus on the “out-of-the-box” experience and the emotional depth of your NPCs to maximize your chances.
